Ultrasonic Sensor with LIVID Brain

Hi all,

I created a recent discussion awhile back regarding IR sensors and some issues I had with stability/noise. I'm using an IR sensor as a midi control in ableton and I have tried stabilizing the data with a few different capacitors, however the data is still leaping and it causes some glitchy noise in Ableton. I've been reading that Ultrasonic sensors are more accurate so I purchased one, but I'm a little confused how to connect the sensor to the Brain Jr.

Also, the range of the Sharp IR sensor I have now is very small (3in-1ft), although the data sheet claims to having a reading range of up to 3M. I'm looking for a sensor with a larger reading range and that is more stable. If you have any recommendations for IR or Ultrasonic sensors that may be more stable, please let me know.

Thank you for your support & Happy Holidays,

-Josias

Base II online editor video tutorial

Hello, just wondering if there are any video tutorials that I could access that go in depth on editing the parameters of the base II with the online editor? I've read the material that Livid makes available through their wiki page but I'm new at this midi editing thing and I could use a little help. I can't seem to get to drum/synth seq mode / shifted , the last four windows of the illustrated editor. Is there something that I have to change in the editor to access this? Also what do the terms "focus" and "make visible" refer to in regard to the function of the upper buttons? Thank you!!!!

IR Sensor Sensitivity HELP Please!

Hi all. I am completely new to making MIDI controllers so my language is going to be extremely simple. I have the Brain Jr. and I am making a controller with 3 IR sensors for mapping effects. Everything is working, but I was wondering if there is a way to turn down the sensitivity of the sensors. In the tool box of the Brain V2 Configure, the graph is somewhat consistent, but still leaps around. When mapping in Ableton, the amount of effect I want is usually in the Mid range and will not go down past around 20%. Is there a way to reduce sensitivity and a way to keep the data at 0 when my hand is not in front of the sensor?

It would be nice for the data to stay at where ever the last detection of distance was. The sensor is constantly taking in data, and its sending the controls I want to map all over the place (usually from 65 to 80 in the tool box). Is there a way I can reduce the sensitivity or just a way for the IR sensor to only read when something is actually in it's range? Sorry if this is confusing, and as you can see, I am completely new to this, but I don't know where else I can reach out to besides this forum.

Thank you!!

Hammond bass pedals

I recently acquired an old hammond organ and I took off the bass pedals to make them into a midi controller to use like taurus pedals.  I got the brain jr to do that job.  But I don't know if I should hook up the notes to the analog or the digital button lines.  Also the wires are a problem. I have 13 black wires for every note, and one brown wire which I assume is a ground, and one brighter brown wire, that I have no clue about. What do I need to do to make this work?

Just got this thing yesterday, and I still can't use it. I let it charge all day and I still can't get it to work when disconnected from USB. It turns on when connected to power, and I got the firmware updated, but it still doesn't turn on when I disconnect the USB cable.

I have put in two support tix so far, and not one reply.

Implementation of an X-Y PAD in Brain JR

Hello there,

I am Emanuele, a guitar builder from Italy.
I am actually making a guitar MIDI controller project, for which I would like to use the Brain JR (i have few space left in the guitar, since there is also a Roland GK13 installed).
One thing that I really would like to implement is an XY pad, in particular this one:

To my ignorant eyes, it seems like 2 softpot membrane potentiometers together, each one for a specific axis. I guess they'll form some kond of matrix or things like that.
I know this can't be so easy ;) , so I'm asking you if I can actually implement this into the project treating it like 2 separate softpots, if I have to do something particular or even if I simply can't do this.

Thank you very much for your help!!!

Brain v2: Getting started

If you have FL studio and any version that has a performance mode, this would help.

So I have a 4x4 of buttons with lights(as per the starter kit). The lights are in a 4x4 matrix. For all intents and purposes, I have reset my brain v2 configuration. None of the lights light up. What I want it to do is this: have the lights light up like in performance mode to see which buttons have patterns on them. Example, towards the end of the video: image

Brain v2 Not playing in FL Performance mode

On a 4x4, I have programmed for the top 3 rows to play sounds and the bottom 4 are scrolling. When side-scrolling, there is no issue, clips play respective to the left-most red line box. When vertical scrolling, however, nothing plays. Not even out of order. Any reason for this?

** even scrolling with the Custom controller and playing with a standard keyboard is fine. The keyboard plays withing the red square. The controller seems to not work at all when I move the red square anything below the top line.

*the red square is the zone in which performance mode is working, example at around the 4:20 mark: image

Cntrl r not recognized in Windows 8.1

Hi,

I have a Cntrl r that works fine on my older laptop that runs Windows 10 now.
I plug it on my recent laptop that runs Windows 8.1, it lights up solid, then goes in Bootloader mode (top right light blinking).
I have not pressed any button to have it do that. I tried to run the Bootloader app to see what was going on, but the Cntrl r is not detected by the app.
Needless to say, I can't use it in Ableton in that case.

Any advice? I leave tomorrow for a four day dj trip!

Thanks in advance,

changing Livid ds1 settings w/ Ableton problem

I have a ds1 I use with ableton. I understand how to change the settings of the ds1 with the online editor. I want the 25 buttons to send CC messages, and not note messages. But sometimes when I change the settings of the ds1 in the online editor and go back into ableton the settings are still set to the default, which is to send note messages. If I get it to work, when I restart my computer the ds1 settings go back to the default again. Is there a way to keep the settings you make in the ds1 after restarting laptop or do you have to go in and change them everytime? I understand you can click save in the online editor. That is not what I am talking about..I click save after I change the settings of the buttons, I also click group to group those settings, and I double check they are all sending cc messages, but when I go back into ableton they are still default. I sometimes get it to work, but if I restart my laptop the settings go back to default. Also I am using the ableton ds1 script, which causes the buttons to send note messages. Is there a way to create another ableton script which tells the ds1 to send CC messages? This way the ds1 can recall the settings I want everytime on start up.

thanks

Block midi mapping

Hey guys and gals

I really like the idea of setting each row on the block the values of C0 through to B0, C1 to B1 and so on, as it stands all the buttons on my block have the same value (C2) and I am still too new at this to get how to change it. Help?

Reason + Base

We have an Alpha script for Reason and the Base here:

There's a README that tells you where to install, and a PNG file that describes the functions of the Base controls.
A short demo video is on youtube: http://youtu.be/7Q_xxTz2wRc

Feedback appreciated!
These features are hardly set in stone. Hell, some aren't even implemented yet!
The mappings for the sliders are based on a Propellerheads example template. We haven't dug into that wormhole yet, we just wanted to get things functioning.

In case you are curious about which 8 modes/scales are implemented, we have:
'Major','Minor','Dorian','Mixolydian','Lydian','Phrygian','Chromatic','DrumPad',
There's many more available. You can edit line 40 in Base.lua and put whatever 8 scales you are interested in as the first 8 items in the "scalenames" array.

Base Scripts Not Appearing in Live 9.5 Prefefences

I updated to Live 9.5 recently, and now the Base Scripts are not appearing among the control surface options in Live's MIDI Sync preferences. Actually, the Base M4L script shows up, but not the Base script or the Base LE. I deleted my existing scripts from Livid and downloaded the most recent version of them, then re-installed. This didn't change anything. I've double-checked Live's MIDI Remote Scripts folder and the Base and Base-LE folders are where they should be.  Live does detect the Base hardware and I can manually map controls. Just can't load the script.

Using Base 01, with firmware updated and default setting just reset using the online editor. Ableton Live 9.5, Mac OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite.

Brain JR LED matrix ghosting problem

$

Hi everyone

I'm using a brain JR to control a matrix of white leds (41 pieces, type:3.2v, 20mA), but I noticed that if I light one LED, another LED starts to illuminate very dim on another row.
I can replicate the issue on a testboard, connect one led on row 1, column 1 and a second led on row 2, column 1.
if I activate led 1, led 2 starts to glow but very dim.

What can I do to remove the glow from the other leds? I tried adding a resistor on each LED, up to 330ohm, but that's not changing anything except the brightness of the active led.
I'm using the leds in a dark environment so it's very annoying to have active leds when they are not active.

Thank you very much for your help

Noise and lack of range on the Analog inputs (Brain v2)

$

Hey all,

I just got some pcbs made up for a custom controller. Everything works, except there is a significant amount of noise on all of the analog inputs. In the image below, you can see how I have the analog pots hooked up. There's a .01uF cap between the signal wire and ground. "+V" in the image is connected to pin 2. and "GND.B" is connected to pin 1. The signal wire (pin 2 on the pot here) goes to pad 1 on the cap, then to pin 3-10 on the analog header.

Symptoms:
  • only a couple analog pots actually go all the way down to 0, and up to 127 (as measured in the brainv2 configure tools window)
  • If a pot goes all the way to 0 or 127, there is no longer any noise on that pot. once the value comes away from either 0 or 127, it will continuously send wobbly data
  • Removing the cap entirely changes nothing

My question is: Did I misunderstand the wiki tip requiring there be a .01uF cap between "signal and ground"? is pin 1 on the header not a ground?

I'm using Bourns PTL-45 sliders, alpha 9mm pots, and a crossfader i purchased from the Livid store. All of these have noise, so I'm guessing it's not a parts choice issue. Within the brainv2 configure, each item is configured as a "pot".

Any hints?

Chaining two Alias8s together with a ribbon cable

$

Hi there,

I currently own an Alias8. It's a fantastic controller, however for the purposes of my particular setup I often end up needing more knobs and sliders immediately accessible (i.e. I often need to manipulate quite a lot of stuff at once, without having to navigate through hidden menus/preset pages). I've been thinking about getting another pre-owned Alias8, and have managed to source one very cheaply. In lieu of plugging both of the controllers into my computer via USB, is it possible to link the two together using the analogue expander ports? I understand that Livid make modular hardware with their XPC stuff, but can two Alias8s work in parallel like this, and if they can, what functionality can I get out of the two devices chained together?
Thanks a lot!
